AFAIK price-optimal parsing for LZ compression is not an invention by Microsoft. The LZX algorithm was developed by Jonathan Forbes and Tomi Poutanen and published as an Amiga file archiver in 1995. The so-called LZX-2 algorithm version already had optimal parsing, however I never saw this version in action. Later in 1997 Jonathan Forbes went to Mircosoft and improved the LZX algorithm for use in Microsofts Cabinet archiver. Im not sure if Microsoft claims any patents on LZX, if so then Jonathan Forbes and Tomi Poutanen selled their authorship rights.Originally Posted by Bulat Ziganshin
