We can see the largest gap in MC update! More than month passed out - no updates found!

    Werner keeps silence...

Anyone know the day of the update?

I can say that MC, especially the MFC, is the base benchmark for me - without MC is heavy to write new compressors...

i think that it is bad policy - writing compressor for testers instead of users. in particcular, i think that most well-known tests don't reflect actual data comopressed by users - large folders of spurces, documents, executables. these strange tests then goes to the user's requirements to add MM compression or something else that they will not really use

imho, testing of gimp sources, windows executables or html docs is the best way to understand which programs are good and which are bad for real users. Werner though about adding such test but not done it

i can propose to all tests authors make, for example, test of OpenOffice sources, executables (and html docs, if possible) like it was done by Squeez authors; and include comp/decomp time here because otherwise paq don't have any competitors

othersie, i personally will continue to mainly ignore such tests because they, imho, don't reflect compression of actual data in real life

UCLC and SqueezeChart should be enough, then, because they test compressor's power in many different areas.

Anyway, how can you without any personal prejudice test compressor's performance, when each user has it's own uses for it? A friend of mine compresses almost only JPG files, other one source codes... I compress almost everything (almost, since there still isn't any compressor that can recompress mp3/mpg/anything else that was precompressed)

Imagine new version of CCM, that can recompress mp3 and mpg and stuff (like soundslimmer already does with mp3 at 70% of ccmx 1.20gs speed)...

I agree, UCLC and the awesome SqueezeChart are great indicators for real world performance.

Nonetheless, Id definitly welcome a MC-update.

SqChart doesnt include large file corpuses (although its mainly important for testing archibers, not compressors). your test inlcude only one such corpus

next moment - summing all results together seems meaningless for me. i have several large corpuses (with 2000 files at least) - binary, C sources, html docs, so on and separate tests for MM compression

    Thanks BF!

I'm very surprised that LZPM 0.03 has NOT been tested.

I notice that PIMPLE 1.43b still holds a good position for the SFC test.

ALZip now also contains a CLI (command line interface) mode which is good news for us testers. PIMPLE2 shows big compression improvements over PIMPLE, but is also a lot slower. LPAQ1 is a lite version of PAQ8L, about 35 times faster, but compressed files are about 10% larger.

    Hello everyone,

back from a three-weeks-holiday (too short, if anyone asks ), I really found this long missed update!

Yeahh! But.. either Im blind, or the download linked from Bulats web-site is still 0.36.
Neither the win32.zip nor the unlinked win32.7z contains a file that has different date than the 0.36 version.
Anyoneone willing to share a compiled version of FreeArc 0.40 for win32? Have I got something wrong?

    Thanks in advance!
    Best regards!

yes, I remember the thread about "advertisement" (which was meant to convince someone to help with a GUI (?) ).

    14-October-2007 :
Added PAQ8O6, CCM 1.25, PackJPG 2.3, LZTurbo 0.1 and LPAQ4. Also added a new curiosity to the fun and curiosity page, look for 'High and low compression with one file?' part.

    02-March-2008 : Added PAQ8O9, FreeArc 0.50a, QuickLZ 1.40b6, RINGS 1.0, CMM3 07/02/2008, SR3a, RZM 0.04, LZTurbo 0.9, FlashZIP 0.03, LZXQ 0.4, LZW 0.2, LZRW1 and BruteCM 0.1a.

PAQ8O9 fails to compress the MFC testset. It seems to be caught in an endless loop while trying to compress a certain file. The MFC results of FreeARC 0.50a are about 4MB worse for all switch combinations tested compared to FreeARC 0.40. In MFC, the compressed filesize produced by LZRW1 is too big to qualify for listing in the MFC charts.

    Thanks Francesco!

I would like to have seen LZTurbo tested for best speed at -11 on the MFC test.
