    Post Squeeze Chart

    Hey guys,

I have brought online another update of my website.
The main testsets and and the special treatment page is updated.

On the main page I added BALZ 1.06, Slug 1.27 among with some others.
I thought it might be interesting to see how Stuffit performs with all filters enabled
and with just the two lossless filters engaged . So those results are also included.

BALZ 1.06 made a huge jump upwards and also Slug 1.27 compresses better.

Somehow offtopic but I've watched the new 'Knight Rider 2008' pilot movie
(the american languaged one) and I found it really cool.. If only my car had
    a "NanoSkin" as well...

All filters enabled means lossy, right? Obviously, it's performance on Squeezechart is good, but not really mind-blowing (7000s using 4 cores!?).

    Yep, Christian,

the round about 7,000 sec were achieved using all 4 cores..
With one core it would be as fast as LPAQ9e

But 12.0.0.8 took about 8,000 sec so there's an improvement.

btw, rar uses 4 cores too. at least on metacompression site it's wall times are less than half of cpu times

Stephan, can you test new freearc version - http://www.haskell.org/bz/FreeArc-0....2008-05-15.exe ? i hope that it finally will perform better than 0.40 also i was surprised by too fast compression of 0.50. may be this is a bug in testing? 2500 seconds looks too good for me

one more test i very interested is "4x4 5" mode. i expect it to be both faster and tighter than slug due to full utilization of 4 cores

Tested WinARC 0.50, Slug 1.27b, QuickLZ 64 Bit (latest) and 4x4 in mode 5.

    Results are online now.

    Now I'm testing BALZ 1.07

BTW, Stephan, since v1.06 BALZ uses my variant of a ROLZ compression algorithm (i.e. - NOT LZ77)

    SqueezeChart update

Finally, after one month of retirement I am back and have updated the main benchmark site. There are many new programs included; most impressive of them is Flashzip 0.9 and BIT 0.2; BCM by Ilia failed to compress the encyclopedia set in this early version, so I decided to not list it in the red bottom but on rank 263.

I think, SqueezeChart is a real-life simulation for general purpose compressors Thanks a lot.

to ilia: fails means in this case that it has been working for over 24 hours on that dataset in sorting stage and didn't come to encoding of that certain block. This is a trap in that dataset with very redundant data on which some others fail as well (p.ex. BBB by Matt Mahoney and also Florin Ghido's QLFC had problems). Newest Balz and Packet are included in upcoming update.

    Arrow Testset renewal (again..)

    Hey guys,

I've been reported that my bitmap and waveform testsets are generated
from mostly lossy sources which hurts results and freezes researches. Therefore I plan to use Sachin Garg's public bitmap testset (all Bit RGB .PPM
and all 8 Bit greyscale .PGM) and the waveform testset will consist of just
stereo AudioCD compatible songs of different genres which I also want to make public. This will hopefully increase research and give other people the opportunity to reproduce the results I got and might also give me some help
(to mail me some I don't have so far (e.g. Hey Stephan.. I've tested the
wav testset with Rar 2.0 and it compresses all files to 500.000.000 in 200 sec..)..

Please tell me what you think about it.
A description can be found here:
    http://www.squeezechart.com/about-testsets.html

Regarding the wave testset: There are suggestions to add more different songs but cut them to 60 sec each (to provide a larger selection in more genres, let's say 70 files in 700 MB). Please tell me your opinion.

    Exclamation SqueezeChart updated

Another SqueezeChart update is online. It introduces new bitmap and waveform sets. Results colored in red are from the old testsets and need to be replaced in the upcoming weeks/months. Those new sets give archivers/compressors with rgb and delta codecs a higher score anddegrades PAQ scores as they do not understand .ppm, .pgm (with some exceptions) and .wav.

    Hello everyone,

thank you Stephan. But at least Prof. John G. Cleary is mentioned two times within different years -> 1984: invented PPM vs. 1995 invented PPM. I think this means that he improved on PPM in 1994.
Marvellous work, collecting all this pictures and infos, indeed! Thank you

    Best regards!

    HI!

Hi Stephan please insert Packet 0.90 in the next release and write the time of compression/decompression of Flashzip 0.90! Thanks!
