So i was thinking about stuff i have seen recently and how things will change for me next year when we get 21Mb net connections over copper telephone line here in the UK.

Things just seem all wrong atm. we by LAW have to pay BBC ?150+ per year for 2..yes 2 low def Analog TV channels. They broadcast HD(freesat) and freeview. but you need additional hardware to recieve them( and freeview is digi box connected to analog ariel. Freesat is sat dish + different hardware). Yet we have to pay for all the sht. then pay extra for hardware if you want to recieve it.. That seems all wrong.

I could if not for the law. Ignore paying ?150 per year. and just DL all the BBC stuff from say states. as its Free to Air. Everywhere but UK. . not to mention all the HD stuff like lost/smallville/reaper... we have to wait a year to see in low def on TV. lol

Then you have games and bittorent.. If I could DL a HD film or Series Eppisode in <10min when I want. Or a game in 5-15min; While i do what I like while waiting. Why would others consider wasting time/fuel/money. going to nearest shop.

Im sure things will change over the comming years; I was just curious if you have thought about what will happen in the comming changes.

You forgot to mention that some TV's are now available with a built-in Freeview digital tuner. All analog UK TV transmissions are to be terminated by 2012.

I agree that the BBC licence fee seems unfair, but according to the BBC it actually funds all of the following public services.

I was mistaken slighly with the 21Mb. its Actually 24Mb. but its BT new 21CN. as in 21 centuary Network. you can check when your exchange will be upgraded and learn about 21CN here.

I still dont agree with BBC licence fee. because its guanteed money for the company. Endorsed by law. this is a consumer choice area not national security :P. why be forced to pay for something you do not want or dont use. Its just wrong. I think they take ?6billion !! per year in fees.

In fact there was some argument recently about funding news stations. and bbc were considering funding other channels news as they have ?70mil per year excess they dont spend. they dont consider lowering the fee though do they?


Yes I have a free view TV now. but originally i had to buy a digi box. but now BBC HD again. what i pay for. I cant get unless i sped more money on a Free Sat setup. box and sat dish+installation. No I never had sky.

For those outside UK who dont know how it works. Law states if you have a device capable of recieving the signal you have to pay. thats a clever bit of law. No adverts on the channels is good. but they also make series like Dr Who/Merlin.. so on 50min long so they can sell them to other countries with adverts its 1hr show. They sold Dr who for 40mil i think. Guaranteed 6bil a year then sell stuff to make more money. win/win.

Yes you can see it annoys me paying for stuff i may not want or cant even get unless i spend money. I know i cant change it; but it helps to vent a little

Just for information about Turkey.

There are four option for TV broadcasting:
1 - Analog: Still very common but almost today's TV are HD compatible on the markets. It's free as expected.
2 - Cable TV: You have to pay fee per month
3 - Sat dish + Receiver: You don't need pay any cent for receiving it. But, you will be faced with some advertisement
4 - Digital TV (or whatever correct word): Sat dish + special receiver. There is a very wide range options for it. You can choose channels which you only want to watch. And you will pay fee for them per month.

There are four common options for internet connection:
1 - Dial-up: I don't think anybody uses it anymore unless they have no choice for immediate connection.
2 - ADSL: It's very common. 1 to 4 Mbps options are exist. For example, I'm using 1 Mbps 4 GB limited connection in my family home while using 2 Mbps unlimited connection in my student flat.
3 - Lease-Line: It's not very common - it's expensive.
4 - Over EDGE or GPRS: It's not very common. I used it couple of times only.

Faster internet connection options are coming (say 24Mbps). Also, a 3G license has been given to one of cellular network already in 2007. So, 3G is nearest future. But, I look forward WiMAX licenses. Because, I'm almost mobile between three cities and it's cheaper AFAIK

In France you have to pay the "Redevance t?l?visuelle" (? 116), only if you have a television, which you are supposed to have by default.
I have no television, so I don't pay it.

It gives access to 19 channels in LD, digital, to 8 channels in HD, digital and to 6 channels in LD, analogic.


If you get a "box" (multifunction mo-dem), you get a 28 Mbps internet connection (100 Mbps U/D where there is optical fiber), unlimited international VOIP and access to hundreds of digital channels (up to 200 with some providers).
And you don't have to pay the "Redevance t?l?visuelle", if you watch tv on your computer...

There, illegal download hasn't increased much, but people download illegally in higher quality. Legal download has increased a lot, at least as soon as companies decided to develop an attractive offer.

Political discussions about illegal download, DRM, global licenses give big controversies for about five years, because of the increase of the bandwidth.
It has been said that internet providers should pay for the television; if they do, access costs will probably increase for the end-users

Japan does for some years (there, optical fiber connections are more common than dsl connections !). Hong-Kong and South Korea also have such bandwidth.

Japan and France are both developping gigabyte connections
