Are there any newer codecs for images and videos?

Hello, let's say that I'd like to archive several images and videos. I know that I can use the legendary JPGPacker to encode and compress my jpg files (otherwise they are not that much compressible). Is there something similar I can do with video? Are there any new codecs for images and video that can provide very good lossy compression (so it would be viable to convert jpg and mp4/3gp/flv files to those new codecs)?

Remember, I want to archive those files, so I don't really care that they won't be immediately accessible.

IIRC the bitstream for AV1 was unfrozen, so you might want to hold off on encoding your video library in AV1

Correct. Unless a faster speed setting is used. I'm not sure if the reference encoder is multi-threaded. The way dav1d seems to speedup decoding is by decoding each frame independently from what I've read. Encoding could be sped up by splitting a video file into segments and then encoding each within a thread. This is what I do with rav1e, just for fun and entertainment.
