1. ## Binary sequence compression

Hi, all,

What is the state-of-art of compressing/predicting binary sequences?

Here is a file of binary sequence. For convenience, I have put binary value in each separate byte, i.e., each byte is either 0 or 1, rather than compacting 8 bits into a byte.

The file has 1587781 bytes, so just by compacting them, it can be reduced to 198473 bytes. For comparison, FSE can compress it to 194283 bytes. I tried BWT and variants, but couldn't compress better.

Anyone is welcome to try and please post results if (much) better.

2. What is the source of the binary data? I am guessing cmix should be state-of-the-art for detecting patterns in arbitrary data - I will try running it tonight. Can you also post the compacted version of the file?

3. In this case, a simple o1 binary arithmetic coder might give the best results, as the probability that a bit changes is higher than for any other longer contexts. It looks like the probability that the next bit is the same as the previous bit is about p=0.345, so you should get theoretically down to about 184500 bytes. EDIT: my simple test script had an indexing bug, so what I wrote is simply wrong; discard it.

4. OK. here is the compacted bit file.

I already did basic stats: # of 0s: 791185, and # of 1s: 796596, p = 791185/1587781 = 0.49829605
so the 0-order entropy is about 0.999992, and we would need about 0.999992 * 1587781/8 = 198472 bytes, which is close to what FSE produces ( 194283 ), but interestingly FSE's result is smaller than entropy!

But this is not what I am looking for, as a good entropy compressor can only compress close to a sequence's 0-order entropy, e.g., FSE would produce same result for any permutation of a same sequence, e.g., 100110100011 and 000000111111, but obviously we can compress much better for the latter-type sequences.

So what I am asking is: what is the state-of-art of finding deeper pattern and thus reaching better compression ratio of a binary sequence?
( In this case, the sequence was just signs ( + and - ) from a predictor's output for another more complicated sequence. )

7. Any specific reason that makes you believe some patterns should be present in this binary sequence ?

paq8px v121 -8:
binary-test.txt: 1587781 bytes -> 194153 bytes in 106,29 s.
bit-test.txt: 198473 bytes -> 193586 bytes in 22,64 s.

interesting are the differences between binary and bit files compression ratios - px is better for bit file, pxd for binary

9. Cmv 0.2.0 best switches I found:

10. Is this just random data, or is there something in it which *should* be compressible?

A basic RLE algorithm got 195224 in very fast order, but that's much the same as FSE too.

My guess is it's mostly random.

11. I really don't know whether it is random or not. I am just wondering if there is any tool to compress or find pattern of seemingly "random" binary sequence, e.g., generated by a random sequence generator or some other structure we just don't know? Any attempts before?

12. The best tools at finding patterns are the neural network based tools like PAQ, cmix, etc. You can also try turning data into images and visualising them via various ways, but this isn't a nice even sized length so it's likely not chunked in that manner. You can also visualising the distribution of repeated patterns using tools like Matt's "fv" tool (see section 2.1 of http://mattmahoney.net/dc/dce.html) to see if they're random chance or signal.

It's minimal though. I think basically it's noise around a central distribution, but with that distribution changing a few points along the file.

This is why a small block size in, say, FSE will yield a better result as it can tune the entropy to the data. The ideal scenario is analysis of the entropy and fixing the break points precisely. It's minimal gains though overall.

15. That is precisely I have been thinking: in theory, we can try cutting a long sequence into multiple sequences, and calculate order-0 entropy for each subsequence, and then just choose a cutting which generates minimum overall entropy. But of course in practice, computation is prohibitively high. I don't know whether this is an NP-C problem ( anyone may have already looked at the problem and proved so ? )

In practice, though, any tool to automatically "visualize" output of fv and then decide cutting as you did, or even can permute the original sequence a bit ( needs an easy way to record permutation )?

16. Another possibility might be "visualize" RLE result of a sequence. Any prior work in this direction?

18. One way of doing this is with a trivial entropy calculation based on observed frequencies. Say for each 1k block determine whether entropy(previous_block_freqs) + entropy(current_block_freqs) is lower than entropy(previous_block_freqs + current_block_freqs), with a bit of overhead to account for the cost in starting a new frequency table. This is naive, but in this case sufficient.

I guess you'd want to have a larger block size initially and if spotting a variance then successively reduce the block size to find the boundary point with the highest size reduction.

Edit: it needs to not reset F_last each block, instead just accumulating so we see the impact of adding this block to all previous data since the last break-point, rather than just this vs last. Anyway, you get the idea.

19. This is interesting! I guess compression block size is very much dependent on the compressor. I don't know how your cmv works, but tried to 1K, 2K, ..., 10K for FSE compression block sizes, but actually yields worse results than the default 32K. I tried to a bit more, and a block size of 40960 ( Bytes ) gives compressed size of 194260, a bit better than 194283 for the default 32KB. As a comparison:

Perhaps my words was bit confusing, cmv is a bit-wise (not a block-wise) CM compressor.
It displays compression info every N bytes, the default is 64 KiB, but in this case I choosed 1 KiB to show better when the compression ratio changes.

Cmv has some predictors and some mixers with context based on the last bits and bytes quantized entropy.

Yes, also in my simple tests cmve doesn't outperform significantly cmv in these files.
