    Any tips from a beginner?

So, I've been analyzing various archive formats from various game for about a while now.

The thing is, while I do know the compression algorithm from some archive files(zlib, gzip) I am clueless about which compression algorithm do the others use.

So rather than asking you people to decompress that file for me(such as the code used for decompressing said file), I made this thread so I can at least learn how compression works, how I can decompress it, etc.

Any tip, starting point, suggestion, etc. is appreciated.

To decompress game files you need to learn reverse-engineering, rather than data compression.
The game is already able to decompress its files, you just have to learn how to find and use that code.

As to starting point... I guess http://aluigi.altervista.org/papers/quickbms.txt .

I already "know" how to use quickbms, also there are a lot of compression algorithms available at quickbms.

But what if I come across a compression algorithm that quickbms doesn't cover(as in, it's not on the list for some reason)?

Well, obviously you can google around, ask on some forums, etc.
But the only reliable way is to locate the decoder in the game itself.
So learn about ida pro, exe unpacking/dumping, etc.
