    PIM Logo PIM v2.8x BETAs

As a pre-release for the "final" PIM v2.90 I decided to release a BETA version first.

    What's new:
+ Added support for reading PIMPLE files
    + Enhanced ZIP-file support
+ Fixed a bug with opening a file
+ Plus, optimizations and many more...

If you have a wish list or ideas for the PIM v2.90 - let me know!

many thanks for the new release

    first look:

    1. it looks very well (kiss = keep it short and simple)
    2. works fast
    3. wishlist: maybe the possibility to open a *.iso-file

*.pk3 or *.pk4 is in use only for Doom and Quake ?

Will look again at ISO file specifications...

Yep, to be honest it is just renamed .ZIP archive, anyway.
PIM also can read PAK archives (QUAKE, QUAKE II, and many more games.) and this is not a renamed .ZIP. Really small number of archivers (or often special game resource extractors) are able to extract .PAK archives... I just love Quake II, so I added such archive format to quick game resource view...

First of all thanks for quake pak support.
    whishlist:
1 now on drag n drop of non archive file pim display "The archive is in unknown format" message and crashes, i would prefer to see "New archive dialog"
2 add file/folder not in submenu

    New day = new version!

    What's new:

+ Added Method column - now you may see which method used for each file
+ Added "Use filters" option to enable/disable filters (specialized compression for EXE, audio and image files)
+ Add Folder/Add File(s) now placed in Commands menu directly
+ Now if you drop a folder into PIM - you'll see the New Archive dialog with <folder_name>.pim name. Choose archive name and new archive containing this folder will be created!
+ As always you may change the compression options on the fly! i.e. adding a large archive, you may switch between all compression methods adding or disabling filters...

Again, wish lists are very welcomed!

    PIM 2.81beta
    + methods called ppmd/bzip2 instead of normal/best
    informative
    + add file/folder in menu
    now adding files much easier
    + method column
    usefull
+ change options on the fly
not intuitive, should be mentioned in readme
    - no status on compression
    - cant sort files view
    - cant update archive
    - still crash on unknown file drag n drop

Changing options is just a "hidden" feature - like with WinRAR you may choose the compression mode on the fly. That's why Settings menu is not disabled during compression.
Progress Bar/File Sorting - not sure that such features will be added. Probably, someday I'll add total progress indication.
Archive update is possible. Will think about an implementation...
It's not a crash! It's just a error message! Maybe I should keep just a warning without program close, however it's in the end of a list...

Adding more powerful compression engine (lzma, balz, lzpm, quad ...) will be useful

I'll keep the serious compression changes for PIMv3!
The main engine might be based on far more improved PPMX or on something new, CM-based...

Added BALZ compression to the main PIM format!

BWT, what kind of compression method should be the Default:

    BALZ
    BZIP2
    PPMD

    ?

Added full filter set to the BZip2 compression, instead of just Exe filter. This makes a new, interesting and efficient compression, including image/audio one...

    Thumbs up

encode, how about multilanguage interface in features versions (like a language files, exp: rus.lng, eng.lng...) ? How about SFX-archive with options like: "after unpacking run file...", "icon of file..." - not bad installation suite with cool compression ratio may be ?
    Thanks for your work!

    (2) SFX

Most likely I will add an improved PIMPLE2 + all filters... This would be CRAZY!

If you want to put Pimple2 compression, I hope you will make it faster. Since it's too slow for practical functionality. I think, at least it should compress enwik9 at ~4000 seconds instead of 18474 seconds

Well it is for benchmarking... To make PIM top ranked archiver! As Malcolm Taylor did with his WinRK. Anyway, the user may choose to use or not PIMPLE2 compression.

Still possible to make it faster without losing ranking on any chart (even you can move upper). And some people in this site are hungry for context modeling discussion and they will be very happy to discuss about it Note that 7-zip is just above of PIMPLE2 with 35x faster while WinRK (PWCM mode) at rank #7 with 3x slower So, you have three options for me:
1-Make it stronger at cost of speed
2-Make it faster without losing strength
    3-Keep as it is
Which option will be your choice? I hope, it won't be 3rd one.

Will do some experiments... Current PIMPLE2 uses about 128 MB, I will expand to 256 MB, will do some optimizations, plus all standard filters from PIM will be added to get the record on bliss.bmp!

    Have an idea to add
[x] Use BALZ for executable files
    while using BZip2.

Still BZip2 with ALL filters is the most efficient method. Using BALZ for executable files we will add an extra compression without sacrificing efficiency!

OK! Waiting with crossed fingers! BTW, keep in mind only expanding memory requirements for a CM codec does not always improve compression as expected. For example, there is no huge difference between BIT 0.7's Fastest Mode (-p=1 ~50 MB) with Best Mode (-p=5 650 MB) for whole SFC (difference was around ~60kb IIRC). For improving compression, the main criteria should be optimized parameters and a good data modeling.

Done some tests - unusable slow - the reason I not included it earlier...
    Still worth experimenting!

Anyway, yet another idea for the main compression is the "pick the best method". We perform actual compression using a few methods and choose the best one. With current algorithms it is PPMd or BALZ. BZip2 may not beat them. PPMd is the main algorithm, but in certain cases BALZ might be better (fp.log, english.dic, pht.psd, ...)

    This should rock!

I noticed that some people don't know what Store/BALZ/BZip2/PPMd means - i.e. which one to use, so it should be better if archiver will decide automatically which algorithm to use...

Only if it can be disabled. I much prefer manual selection.
