Would this be worth it for a compression rig ?
i got my hands on the following gear
Dual Xeon 5645 ("nehalem cpu")
http://ark.intel.com/products/48768/...-GTs-Intel-QPI
2.4ghz- 2.67GHX
6cores with hyperthreading
total 24 execution units
It comes with with 48gb registes eec ddr3 ram (24gb for each cpu)
it also has a couple of 4x 10gbe ports and 8x 1gbe ports but no storage units
I have to jerryrig a power supply for it but im pretty confident in doing that.
my price is 75$ maybe even way lower
its mainly going to be used for 7-zip compression. x.264 encoding and png optimizing (takes forever)
Go for it or no ?

Take into account how many cores you may actually utilize. Then, take no more and go with the faster cores.
I mean, 12 threads at 3.7GHz should be more suitable and faster than 24 threads at 2.4GHz, if you only can utilize, say, 8 or 12 threads. Of course, if we talking about the same-gen-hardware.

Also, the CPU you listed is not new... I bet the newer LGA2011(-3)/1150 i7 have better RAM bandwidth at the very least.
