Video compression.
User, not developer, question.

I backup my movie dvds. I use taiyo yuden dvd-tx8 4.5 media.
I use the latest dvdfab to hard drive, 1x1, and & nero6 to burn.
I?ve asked nero about compression algorithms but they ignore me.

Nero is analyzing the data stream and compressing it to the requested size. I expect someone else is supplying the algorithms / technology.

I?m happy using nero 6 to burn but if there is better software I?d appreciate a note.

AFAIK, FFV1 doesn't support the rgba colour space.

x264 supports also a lossless mode but ffv1 has a better compression/speed relation but compress a lossy video i think it will compress bad because its already compressed. but what i have though is maybe possible. If you have a lossy compressed x264 video, maybe you can decode the last step cabac/cavlc coding and the resulted data(which needs to defined in a fileformat) maybe you can but in a normal archiver like freearc, in decompression you do the the same in returning order

Lagarith (LAGS) is old and old bugs started being fixed only in recent two years. Its multithreaded encoding may seem moderately quick, but it's decoding is slow.
The best general purpose lossless codec for some time already seems to be UT Video (English README of latest version, doom9 thread). Final result will take a bit more space than LAGS, but it will be MUCH easier to decode for your CPU, thus better suited for NLE stuff for instance, etc.

DVD is Y'CbCr 4:2:0, which is often misnamed as Y'UV420p or YUV420 aka YV12.

You can use many codecs to store such colorspace information losslessly:
- x264 (H264) - give --crf 0 as option
- UT Video (ULY0)
- ffmpeg/libav's ffv1 (FFV1)
- ffmpeg/libav's ffhuff (FFVH)

Mind that x264 and UT Video encoding is supported in ffmpeg/libav too. The latter one isn't multithreaded though.
x264 will give the best results in regards to disk space, but is also the slowest one (when size matters for you the most). You can tune efficiency:speed ratio using predefined presets like: ultrafast (for great speed) or veryslow (for great compression).

But storing lossy (in the first place) information in a lossless manner will only take more place (unless lossless codec is much much better than the lossy one), so there is no point in transcoding your videos.
Just backup them as they are (you will often need bigger DVD than 4.3GB). As for how, it's rather not the right forum to ask such question, but there are plenty of texts about it in the internet.

One thing that wasn't mentioned is if you were burning this to DVD to watch on TV, or for storage. If for storage and Nero is recompressing it for some reason, don't use it ;p ImgBurn is free and does the job perfectly.
I ask because you mention taiyo yuden and you wouldn't use quality media like that for storage, it's normally used for mass replication.

For backup of media files, a dock station to swap hard discs (USB 3.0 or eSATA) is quicker than burning.
Although your low priced 'taiyo yuden' disc solution is not bad.
