native deduplication in Windows 8 x64

A guy from MDL has extracted the cab from windows server 2012 to bring the deduplication feature in W8 x64 (it cannot work with W8 x86).

I gave it a try on the W8 enterprise trial and it works perfectly. Space savings depends highly on content type, giving very high space savings for VM and less for documents files or already compressed files. It can be enabled on external storage devices (external HDD). Doesn't work on system drive and I haven't tried on flash devices.

It is compatible with NTFS compression and Bitlocker.

I wouldn't say that they are lying, the compression ratio are informative for given categories of files. Nonetheless, it would be interesting to see how it compares with SREP and Exdupe.

Yes, it is offline and totally transparent for the user and very useful for storage volumes.

It's called disinformation. They created artificial datasets or carefully chose existing ones, there's no way I can believe that what they claim is even close to average.
Most outrageously, 50% dedupe of documents (or did they say 60%? I don't bother to look again)?
No way, they are zips and even if you keep multiple versions of the same document, dedupe ratio will be low and how often do you keep multiple versions of the same? And there's probably also a more subtle lie, a suggestion that it matters. For whom documents are a big part of storage? Here I might be wrong, but I doubt for anybody.

In some of the small to mid-sized companies the invoices are saved separately as Word documents. On accountants' computers these are practically the only major filetype.

Does it make it big enough to matter? Because most companies use terabytes when speaking about storage. Except for the petascale ones.

There well may be a lot of these small companies compared to the large ones, I don't know. But I don't think one such company matters much (tens of gigabytes).
