    Smile Decompressing - KGB Archive GTA IV.kgb 2GB into 64kb ?

I've read many stories about KGB Archive and would like to test it out but my laptop has poor performance on Celeron 1.97ghz i think and 2gb memory, I would like to ask somebody here with a high end computer with i7 or dual core processors to try and extract the kgb file below and tell me if the extracted file is working ? and if it works how on earth is this possible ?

    http://www.mediafire.com/?5t8ibd66e583ad5

it says KGB compressed from nearly 2 gb into 63 kb that to me is simply crazy I'm already extracting to see if this thing truly is working but it taking very long for me.

you need to install the KGB Archive 2 beta and MS framework 2.0

Don't waste your time..it's impossible - except the data contains only "0" ...

If KGB is using PAQ internally, then yeah it could take a few days to unpack 2 GB. And yes, any highly redundant data could pack that small, like the same byte sequence repeated over and over.

Don't bother it.These types of kgb archives have been floating around the internet since long promising to have compressed MS Office 2007 in 64kb or something else.I've tried it and it only will end up with corrupt files.Don't waste your time.

    Thumbs up

decompression is at 51% @ 3 hours already, inside the folder there is main.rar and every time i refresh the directory i look at the size ! it is growing little by little , sorry it is not 2 GB it is less than 1 gb i mis-read the size.

i hope it works, i will report later

KGB uses old versions of PAQ to compress archives, it is not special it's using other peoples work so avoid it like the plague.

Nonsense. You've been scammed, that's your not KGB's fault.

KGB works and while personally I don't like it, it doesn't deserve such trashing.

Personally I would not use any compression format that wasn't documented and open source for anything important. Compressia and WinRK and older versions of Nanozip were fast and had really good compression ratios, but if you had saved anything in those formats, it's gone now.

    @ m^2

its working really great at corrupting the whole file with
    YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
6 hours of decompression, the result was fair the decompressed files were all corrupted and unusable. it may work on smaller files or as store mode etc but the actual high compression modes render useless garbage after decompression. i wouldn't recommend users in using KGB Archive because of that

i was hopping to actually close this thread ! damn you KGB Archive

KGB is FOSS, it uses GPLed code from PAQ so it has to be.

Yeah, really, and you still don't see that the person who gave you the archive just fooled you and it was simply fake?

My mistake about KGB. I should do more research before I say anything. KGB is based on PAQ6 and is GPL.

Also, looks like the site has moved from http://kgbarchiver.net/ to http://sourceforge.net/projects/kgbarchiver/

I already told you but you didn't listen.Anyways its not kgb archiver's fault,it's just the archive.I've used kgb archiver on other files and it works just fine.Don't waste your time on kgb archives claiming to have a god like compression it will always turn out to be a fake.

Over the years, there were many similar claims of files with astounding compression ratio posted everywhere on the web.
Such compression ratio is only possible for highly redundant input data (like a file containing all 0, or the same character repeated billion times) run through any quite efficient compressor, but claiming the input is something like Office or Windows or any other huge package is a fake.

KGBarchiver is based on PAQ6 so it is a slow but very powerful compressor, even if it is no longer capable to match performances of more recent PAQ implementations.
As for what I know there is no problem in compressing an higly redundant input of some GB with KGBarchiver to few KB, and then get back the original data (given the reasonable amount of time due to the powerful algorithm).
It is a quite widespread Open Source project and I don't think it has flaws in extracting back original data, it is the original data that is just a redundant file and not what claimed, so don't expect it does something useful when extracted!
